Group Bio

The Apple Chill Cloggers are a vibrant and energetic folk dance troupe hailing from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Since their inception in 1975, they have been passionately dedicated to the preservation, performance, and promotion of the rich musical and dance traditions of the Southern Appalachian mountains. This traditional ensemble not only honors age-old customs but also showcases their creativity through intricate expressions that weave together authentic regional "flat-footing" footwork and classic square dance formations.

Their dynamic performances are elevated by lively modern step combinations and routines that captivate audiences. Clogging itself is a flavorful amalgamation of influences, drawing from English, Irish, Native American, and African dance steps and rhythms. Notably, clogging has earned recognition as the official folk dance of North Carolina, embodying the cultural heritage and spirited creativity of the region.

Director Bio

Christine Fox Harkey

Christine Harkey has been the festival director of the Apple Chill Cloggers since 2010. She learned to clog in the mountains of North Carolina. Influenced by the folk revival of the 1970’s, she was a founding member of her school's traditional clogging team. Christine took ballet, tap, and jazz classes in high school and college. While in art school, she took a clogging class taught by a graduate of the BYU folk dance team. He started teaching some folk dances, and she was hooked! While on a trip to Germany, she saw some Bavarian folk dancers and decided she needed some folk dance in her life. In 2004, Christine joined the Apple Chill Cloggers and was excited to start performing internationally. Christine has a BFA in art education from UNC Greensboro and was a secondary art teacher for 33 years.

I took clogging when I was young when Durham County had all these events. It was so fun!
