Group Bio
The American Folk Dance Ensemble has participated in 74 festivals across 37 countries since its founding in 1964. They have been invited back to the Mondial des Cultures de Drummondville in Quebec, Canada, more than any other group in the festival’s history. In 2024, they performed at the Vallarta Azteca International Folk Dance Festival in Mexico before touring the Southern United States.
In 2023, the group attended CIOFF folk festivals in Czechia and the Danube Carnival Festival in Hungary. In 2022, they showcased their talent at the Hello! Schoten Folk Festival and participated in festivals across Belgium, Cacak (Serbia), and Bitola (Macedonia), while engaging in a cultural exchange with Folklorni Ansambl "Vila" in Novi Sad, Serbia.
In 2019, the ensemble performed in the Hello! Schoten Festival in Belgium and the International Folklore Festival 'Eurofolk' in Zamosc, Poland. They have been welcomed back to several prestigious festivals, such as the International Folklore Festival in Haifa, Israel; the Festival de Confolens in France; and the Billingham International Folklore Festival in England.
The ensemble includes 28 dancers and 7 musicians, supported by a live band, Mountain Strings, which plays bluegrass and other American styles. All performers are Brigham Young University students from diverse regions across the U.S.
Founded in 1956 by Mary Bee Jensen, who led the group for 22 years, the ensemble initially focused on Scandinavian dances. They went on their first international tour in 1964, making them BYU's first student performing group to travel overseas. They have represented the United States at notable events, including the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics and the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. On their 50th anniversary, they toured the Baltic States and produced the television special "America Through Dance," which reached 20 million viewers.
The touring team comprises approximately 46 students, including dancers, musicians, and technicians, receiving training in various dance styles and opportunities for scholarships.
As cultural ambassadors, the ensemble shares folk traditions through performances worldwide. Their "Journey" program offers audiences a global experience through dance and live music, emphasizing their role in shaping the future of traditional dance.
