Group Bio

The Idaho Rocky Mountain Express is an American Folk Ensemble. The Northwestern US rural town of Burley Idaho is their home.

The dancers present folk dances originating or evolving in the United States of America and presented in beautiful stylized costumes. The bluegrass band accompanying the dancers includes the instruments violin, banjo, guitar, bass, mandolin, and percussion.

The Idaho Express team presents music and dance from 1800s pioneer, 1920 Charleston, Appalachian Mountain flatfoot, 1930s swing dance, Afro-American Steppin, Native American Indian Hoop Dance, and American Clogging.

These energetic young people are popular entertainers. They have trained for many years as competitive cloggers. They are grateful for the festival opportunity and excited to be sharing their show internationally.

The Idaho Rocky Mountain Express has been traveling internationally since 1996. Each year the team is chosen from among 200 dancers from the Idaho Xpress Studio. They have completed 17 international festival tours

Director Bio

Melissa Handy Morgan / Kristine Handy

Melissa Handy Morgan is the Creative Director of the Idaho Rocky Mountain Express (IRME), an American folk dance ensemble based in Burley, Idaho. She also owns and operates the Idaho Xpress Dance Studio, which serves as the training ground for the ensemble. Melissa has deep roots in Burley and a rich background in dance. While a student at Ricks College, she served as an assistant director of the Folk Dance Team, contributing to choreography, costume design, and management of the costume room. Her extensive experience in performance and choreography has taken her around the world, sharing her talents with diverse audiences. She is known for her ability to help performers shine on stage through well-crafted routines and attention to detail in costumes. As Creative Director, Melissa leads the Idaho Rocky Mountain Express, a youth ensemble aged 11–24, chosen from over 200 students at the Idaho Xpress Dance Studio. The group specializes in American folk dances, including clogging, swing, Appalachian flatfoot, and Native American hoop dance, accompanied by a live bluegrass band. Under her direction, the ensemble has performed at numerous international festivals since 1996, showcasing the rich traditions of American dance. Melissa and her husband, Bryce Lynn Morgan, are parents to six children. Their family is deeply involved in the arts and the community, with several members participating in performances and productions locally. Kristine Handy is the founder of The Idaho Rocky Mountain Express. She and her large family go back many generations in the rural town of Burley, Idaho. She and her husband gained a deep love of folk dancing while attending Brigham Young University. Their dance teams were in great demand as performers around the USA. In 1996, the Idaho Rocky Mountain Express received an international invitation to attend festivals in Poland. From that beginning, their teams have traveled the world, providing opportunities to hundreds of young people to learn and share their own intangible cultural heritage. In 2004 Burley Idaho held its own international festival. The Magic Valley Folk Festival continues to bring the world to rural Idaho. Kristine is a member of the CIOFF USA board and is active in CIOFF International.
